Best Modern Cloth Nappies Tips for Use and Care

Best Tips for Controlling MCN Odours Pre-Wash

Baking soda is a miracle odour eater! (Note: not suitable if you or baby have allergies to sodium bicarbonate.) You can sprinkle this powder on your soiled Modern Cloth Nappies (MCNs) before placing in a dry or water-filled bucket. We recommend cold water soak.

Sometimes a light scrub with baking soda and water is helpful. Hold the outside of pocket nappy, make fists and rub together. Another option is to put a chemical-free, deodorant disc at the bottom of the bucket or clean it out with vinegar and water after you put nappies in wash.

Some soiled cloth nappy bags have a fabric pocket sewn inside the seam. This pocket can be used to add baking soda, natural odour absorber disks, essential oil drops (i.e.; Tea Tree, Lavender, Sandalwood, etc.) or herbs to help minimize or absorb strong odours. Note if it is porous, the liquids are not an efficient choice.

Best Tips for Machine Washing MCNs

When deciding how many nappies to wash together, be aware of the load recommendations of your machine. Oz Nappies includes labels inside their MCN pockets with clearly marked instructions such as cold water wash and rinse.

Notice some brand labels tell you to close zippers or Velcro tabs before washing to avoid nappies sticking together or to other clothes. Before any wash, knock solids into the toilet.

A good rule of thumb is: “do not jam as many nappies as you can into the machine.”Doing half loads is actually a super way to clean thoroughly. Also use ½ of the recommended amount of detergent to minimize soap suds and residue build-up.

Best Tips for Making Eco-Friendly Baby-Wipes

Oz Nappies favours eco-friendly awareness and practices. Many people save money by making their own Eco-Friendly baby wipes to use with MCNs. To do this, all you need is a roll of strong paper towel, a water-proof plastic container with a lid that seals, 1 tablespoon of baby shampoo or baby wash, 2 cups of water, and a tablespoon of baby oil. It is also helpful to have a sharp instrument like a knife to cut the paper towel roll in half.

Mix liquid ingredients in the clean container and place ½ roll of paper towel with the cut side of sheets facing downward. Close air-tight lid and leave to rest upside down 15 minutes.

After elapsed time, turn container right side up and your wipes are ready to begin using. You may also write recipe instructions and place this paper on lid of container and attach using transparent tape. This prepares you to make the next batch.

Best Tips to Avoid Nappy Changing Battles

Oz Nappies knows babies can be restless or fidgety and resist the nappy change experience. Notice baby is a captive audience for your voice, behaviour and gestures. Baby feels more tense or relaxed based on what you do. Remember you can decide to have fun, be creative. Pretend the diaper is a puppet, give it a voice. Use another toy as a distraction. Flashlights or special toys can be kept near nappy change area and used only when you are there. You can also experiment with quick changes, changing baby in different places, tickling the neck or tummy which tend to trigger giggles or even allow baby to sit or stand during the the nappy change experience. You are only limited by attitude and imagination!

Best Tips for Reducing Energy Usage

Oz Nappies encourages an eco-friendly focus and reminds you of continued opportunities to reduce energy usage related to your MCNs. Be aware of how much electricity you use to wash and dry reusable cloth nappies. If you want to cut your electricity usage by 50-60%, line drying is a great choice!

Sometimes bucket soaking and hand washing is also desirable over machine washing. Be interested in the manufacturing process.

Note that reusable nappies are manufactured, bought and purchased only once (or maybe a few times), thus saving lots of fuel used in the distribution of disposable nappies which are bought continually. Recognize all your nappy-related choices help you and your baby as well as the Earth.

Best Tips for Eco-friendly Nappy Stain Removal

Oz Nappies experiments with natural MCN stain removers. The sun is naturally effective for bleaching out nappy stains. Many people are unaware you can “sun” diapers on a rainy day! The UV will do its trick even if you do not see the sun. Bac-out and Bio-Kleen are organic options that do not damage our reusable nappy covers. Adding a scoop of Oxy-clean to the wash is great if you have carrot, pumpkin or sweet potato stains on the outer covers. Other popular stain removers include lemon juice and baking soda applied separately pre-wash. Some people even claim white toothpaste is an effective, localized stain remover. (*Caregivers are encouraged to read labels of any products to be aware of possible allergies.)

Best Tips for Extending Life of Reusable Nappies

Oz Nappies encourages you to be aware you can extend the life of your Modern Cloth Nappies (MCNs) so they last longer, hold their material quality and retain absorbency. Line drying increases the resilience of fitted pocket nappy covers, material absorbers and cloth inserts.

Placing nappies in a wet pail pre-wash and using less detergent than you would in a normal clothes wash are also ways to extend the life of reusable nappies. We recommend you avoid harsh detergents and stain removers that can reduce the absorbency of MCNs.

Tips are available to strip the build-up of undesirable substances and restore the effectiveness of original reusable cloth nappies Cared for properly, you can use your MCNs for more than one child (from birth to potty training). Now that gives peace of mind!

Best Tips for Minimizing & Avoiding Leakage in Reusable Nappies

Textile advances mean you have choices among breathable, organic and combination fabrics for reusable nappies. Oz Nappies offers one size fitted pocket nappies made of combined fabrics with a waterproof cover. They are shaped, pre-sewn, offer adjustable snaps, hooks and loops and are pre-elasticated to fit your baby.

The two inserts provided give excellent containment and absorption. You can also buy extra inserts. Some parents find that buying different brands of MCNs made of different materials gives them more freedom to interchange styles, absorbers, nappy covers and also layer inserts.

Some people find layering microfibre with hemp or bamboo is more absorbent than a single liner alone. All three are great absorbers. Experience tells you what works best for you.

Fleece and micro-suede keep moisture away so they are desirable for the layer of material next to baby’s skin. Oz Nappies have a micro-fleece liner on the inside of their pocket nappies.

Best Tips for Reusable Nappy Detergents

Many cloth nappy detergents exist. Some special formulas exist for MCNs. You can even make your own. It is always good to read detergent labels. Notice if your regular detergent contains enzymes, brighteners, bleach, dyes, fragrances and softeners.

For babies with sensitive skin, sensitive formulas usually do not contain dyes and fragrances. The more natural and the less soap build-up the better for MCN care. Softeners lessen the absorbency of reusable nappy inserts and soapy detergents can also clog up the material and make it less effective.

If this does happen, you can strip out undesirable substances. It is recommended you use the same detergent for regular wash as for washing nappies as detergents can leave residue in machines. If you do choose to use different detergents or even fabric softeners for other clothes, wipe out machine with a 50/50 mixture of water and vinegar before washing MCNs.

If you share a machine with other families, you may wish to strip once a month with a tiny squirt of plain dish liquid or simply 3 hot washes in a row without using any detergent.

Best Tips for Stripping Reusable Nappies

If you make the mistake of washing your MCNs with pure soap, fabric softeners or have hard water, it is desirable to remove the build-up left behind in the fibres of your reusable nappies.

Also, if you wash natural fibres with synthetics or do not rinse all the detergent out of your MCNs each time you wash, you may notice your fleece begins to repel or your MCNs begin to leak. If your MCNs develop an odour when clean, this can signal it’s time to “strip” your MCNs. This simply means to take your clean MCNs (do not have to be dry) and machine wash them alone on 2-3 times without detergent.

Best Tips for Choosing Modern Cloth Nappies

When choosing your MCNs, Oz Nappies invites you to consider factors like; cloth nappy material, absorbency, price, quality, dependability, company country of origin, intuition and customer satisfaction.

Parents find out about Modern Cloth Nappies through different means; media, word-of-mouth, in-person community events and other ways. Magazines and on-line sites also offer reusable nappy reviews. Surveys rating specific criteria offer food for thought.

Note however that when an MCN brand is highly-rated in one review it may not even be mentioned in another. The size of a business or how long it has existed are not the only factors people consider. Many people choose to buy MCNs from different companies and mix and match colors, styles and absorbent inserts.

Best Tips for Buying Modern Cloth Nappies

Oz Nappies knows parents favour natural, synthetic, organic or a combination of MCN materials. Some parents love patterns, solid vibrant or plain colours or mixed packs and brands for options.

You may wish to match reusable nappies with your child’s clothes or choose colours and styles to hide them. Whichever route you choose, it is recommended you have at least 18-24 nappies on-hand which would mean you could wash every two to three days and leave some to dry while having others ready for use.

On average, a baby goes through 6-12 nappies per day and this usage tends to decrease over time. As you get to know your baby’s wetting trends and decide how often you want to wash, you adapt nappy buying and washing system accordingly.

Best Tips for Drying Reusable Nappies

Line drying is the recommended way to dry your Oz Nappy MCNs. Sunlight naturally bleaches out many stains and ensures the MCNs smell fresh and are well aired. It is desirable MCNs be totally dry before re-using them.

Read care instructions in pocket nappies. Tumble drying can cause damage to some materials. Our Polyurethane laminate (PUL)/ microfleece covers and absorbent inserts can be tumble dried low.

Alternatives include; drying MCNs on a clothes horse, laying over radiators or air drying in another place. We welcome your additional suggestions.

Tips for Storing Wet/Soiled Modern Cloth Nappies (MCNs)

To store wet/soiled MCNs, Oz Nappies recommend you get a few waterproof tote bags with a tie top and a few plastic buckets with lids. Keep a tote or bucket near the changing area. The second nappy tote can be used to store used nappies while out or visiting away from home.

When you return home, transfer the wet/soiled nappies to a wet/ dry nappy bucket until wash time. Some people buy a mesh bag to line the dry bucket.

When full, simply pick up the mesh bag and zipper up with the nappies inside and put the whole thing into the washing machine.

As for soiled MCNs, dump solid waste into the toilet and soak in a bucket of water ('wet bucket') before wash. To avoid stale water and odours, do not leave soiled cloth nappies in wet bucket more than 1-2 days.
